Controls the form of individual line elements on any surface
Profile of a line controls the shape of individual cross-sectional line elements of a surface relative to a true profile defined by basic dimensions. Without a datum it controls form only. With a datum it also controls orientation and location of each line element independently.
Use profile of a line when individual cross-sections of a complex surface must conform to a true profile, but variations from section to section are acceptable. Common for extruded profiles, airfoils, or any surface where consistent cross-sectional shape matters but alignment between sections does not.
